Troop 121 at Camp Fire Mountain

Troop 121 went to Camp Fire Mountain (Mt. Baker Council in NW Washington State) for Summer Camp. Despite many coming home with bandages from either Mountain Boarding or "Finger Carving" (Steven's Term), everyone had a great time! All the photos can be found in the Photo Gallery here. Camp Farm Nut

Scouts and Families,
Camp Farm Nut is this weekend! Attached is a PDF file with all the information for the event. Signups were made available at tonight scout meeting.
** If you are interested in attending Camp Farm Nut and didn’t sign up tonight, please email Mr. Barz and let him know.
Cost for the event is:
$20.00 - Full weekend (All Meals)
$10.00 - Saturday Only (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner – and Sunday Breakfast if staying the night)
$5.00 – Saturday Dinner Only
** Payment (or the use of campership) is due when you check-in.
Merit Badges:
Friday Night – Personal Fitness (Mrs. Robles)
Saturday – Citizenship in the Nation (Mr. Walsh)
Sunday – First Aid (Mr. Wampler)
** If you plan to take one of these merit badges and did not sign up at the meeting, please email the appropriate Merit Badge Councilor above and let them know.

September 2010 Court of Honor

Tonight was our Court of Honor. The scouts earned 42 merit badges since our last Court of Honor in July. Way to go Troop 121! Also our new SPL, Kevin Walsh was given the Troop Briefcase to lead us for the next six months.

Congratulations Ben Johnson!

Keizer Troop 121’s latest Eagle Scout celebration was held today for Ben Johnson. After an opening flag ceremony, former Committee Chair Jill Robles welcomed everyone. Brian Condello provided a warm invocation, which was followed by several fun remembrances of Ben’s years in the scouting program. Patrick Moore read just a few letters of congratulations including the Governor of Oregon. After the formal part of the ceremony, Ben gave a heart-felt speech of thanks and inspiration to the other scouts behind him to stay in scouts and “don’t quit”. Troop 121 would like to congratulate Ben for his great achievement and thank him for being a great role model for the younger scouts! (Please see some of the photos in our gallery window.)

Gold Panning with Troop 121

There is real gold in dem dar hills!
We now have a FINAL set date for the Troop 121 Gold Panning Trip. We will camp on County park land and we will pan in a real working gold claim area that is owned by Jerry McGee. More details to follow:

Jerry said he can not promise everyone will find gold but did say that he has gone to this claim for years and has never gone home without someone finding some gold. Jerry has the actual legal minieral rights to the gold claims but he generously said that any scout (or adult) on this trip can keep all the gold they find!!! He will have some glass tubes ready for us to bring the gold home.

The best thing about this is that the boys will learn a skill they can use in the great outdoors for their entire lifetime. Please mark your calendars for June 4-6 for the campout. The actual gold panning with Jerry McGee will take place on Saterday, June 5, 2010.

All that will participate will need a gold pan (you can get one for under $4.00). Mr. Walsh can pick this up in bulk once we get a final headcount. We will also all be given one of Jerry's books, (Follow the River) that has a couple of chapters on gold panning and will make the trip more enjoyable if everyone reads it before the trip. The cost of the trip is $5.00 per person (plus food and transportation) and the book is free. (or the book is $5.00 per person and the trip is free), either way, we should have a great time. (the book normally retails at $15.00 per copy.) Jerry is donating his time and land (and gold) for free and the book is given to us at cost.

There will also be a special "training session" at 7:00 on June 1, 2010, during the regular Tuesday scout meeting. This is the last meeting before the camping trip. This is required for everyone going on the campout (adults also please) as we would rather be panning and not training during our one day on the gold claim. Please e-mail Mr. Walsh and let him know if you are coming so that he can give Jerry a headcount and order the books. Also let him know if you want him to buy your pan(s).

Christmas Tree Recycling

This year's tree recycling was a great event. We didn't quite raise as much money as previous years, but there was a little bit of competition in our area this year. We had a great turn out of scouts and adults!

Thank you to all of you that helped Troop 121 during this event.

Schedule Updates

We have solidified the calendar for the next several months as well as penciled in the following six months. Just a few dates for you to put on your calendar:

Nov 17: We will be having our troop meeting at Forest Ridge Elementary School at 6 pm where we will be working with the Bear den from Pack 12 to build birdhouses. If you can bring a hammer please do so.
Dec 5: We will be doing Scouting For Food on this day. We don't have the details worked out yet but keep your eyes and ears open for more information
Dec 6: Adult Christmas Party 4 pm location to be determined
Dec 11-12: Evergreen Aviation Museum We will be camping out Friday night, enjoying a private tour of the museum Friday, and then working on the Aviation Merit Badge on Saturday Cost $25 approx. We should be back early enough for those who need to be in the Salem Festival of Lights Parade.
Dec 19: 6-10 pm We will be working at the food donation booth for the Christmas Lights in the Gubser neighborhood on this date We will have two shifts, 6-8 and 8-10. We are in need of five adults and as many boys as we can get This counts for service hours for the boys needing that requirement.
Dec 29: Troop meeting We don't normally meet during Christmas break but we will be having a short meeting to work out details of Christmas Tree recycling-This meeting is for boys and adults.
Jan 2-3: Christmas Tree recycling
Jan 9-10: Christmas Tree recycling

New Leadership Positions

As many of you know we had a few leadership positions open that were needing to be filled. We have filled those positions with very capable people so if you see any of the following adults at a meeting or around town make sure to thank them for helping out your son(s).

There are several other roles and positions to be filled. If you are interested in helping out, please contact one of our adult leaders. We can always use your help!

Lion Hall clean-up time change

For those of you who are planning on coming on Saturday August 29 to help clean up around the Lion's Hall there has been a change in the time. After talking to the representative of the Lion's who will be there on Saturday the time has been changed to 9 am.

We will be doing some brush removal out back and some tidying up of the flower beds in front of the building. We will need you to bring yard tools if you can:rakes, pitchforks, clippers, etc. Also, remember to bring work gloves. It is recommended that you wear long pants and at least bring a long sleeve shirt in case you are hauling brush. If you have any questions call Jill Robles.
